Adam Clayton Powell IV
Adam Clayton Powell IV, the New York assemblyman who rides on his famous last name, is due in court today. And it is not for something noble that his legendary father would have done, like civil disobedience.
Powell was charged in 2008 with driving drunk on the Henry Hudson Parkway. A woman was reportedly passed out in the backseat of his car.
Out of the elected officials who represent El Barrio, Powell IV is known as the one with the least fire in his belly and the lightest work load—by choice. This is an attitude and poor work ethic that El Barrio can little afford to have in an elected representative.
Last fall, City Hall News reported that Powell announced interest in challenging Congressman Charles Rangel for his seat. Rangel, another official who represents El Barrio, has been in plenty of hot water himself for tax and ethics issues.
Powell’s father – Adam Clayton Powell Jr.— once held the congressional seat Rangel is clinging to right now.
