Sabor Latino in the heart of Hollywood
In this spirit the 12th edition of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival held the opening night celebration with a special screening of “Café de los Maestros” by Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla. By the way, Gustavo is also this year’s GABI Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Last year, the festival gave the same honor to Antonio Banderas.

As you listen to these masters you feel their passion and undying love for this music. I think it also reflects how much we can learn from older generations. Mira está entrevista de Gustavo
I walked out of the theatre feeling this music in my soul. If you are in town, I highly recommend you try catching today’s screening of the film at the Chinese Mann Theatre in Hollywood. But, if you have already seen it, express yourself and let me know what you think.

“Cafe de Maestros” simply put, touched my heart. A beautiful story about the Argentine art form of tango music, and the ties that connected all the ‘maestros” who participated in its creation and legacy. What moved me was how all these greats in their late years were so full of life, loving every moment and giving it all for their art form, for their tango. The life that tango music enlivened in them was so magical to experience.
For all the local Socal gente, if you have an opportunity, attend the Los Angeles Latino Film festival and see this movie. You will leave the theater feeling a need for living life and enjoying a little tango!

I’m a great fan of Santaolalla’s musical work, but to be honest I hadn’t heard of his new movie. Your recommendation has definitely sparked an interest! I’ll have to go check out the showtimes and catch “Cafe de Maestros”. Congrats on your new blog!!!

I just came from watching the documentary CELIA THE QUEEN and it is an awesome film.
In a gist, it conveys the story of the most beloved Celia the artist and the woman; her rise to international stardom; and a legacy she built due to her talent (obvious), and genuineness as a daughter Cuba who only wanted to take her island’s music and flag to to the highest levels around the world.
Some of the best scenes are actual footage with her performing with the FANIA RECORDS artists: the great late Hector Lavoe, the amazing Tito Puente, and Fania’s band leader Johnny Pacheco.
Great music, great accounts from those close to her, as well as interviews with Dr. Maya Angelou, Quincy Jones, David Byrnes, Wyclef Jean, Ruben Blades, etc.
GO CHECK IT OUT!
