Flying can be fun — and educational
Well, last week’s post was cautionary (about flying safely), so this one is more about fun and flying. My friend Isabel was coming home from a trip to the West Coast over the weekend and wasn’t particularly looking forward to the cross-continental trek back to Miami. “It’s such a boring flight,” Isabel said. But this time, the work of a lively (and well-read!) flight attendant helped make the time…uh…fly.
“I was sitting in the bulkhead row [the one between two sections - it has more leg room] and the flight attendant was nearby in the jump seat reading a book,” Isabel recounted. “We got to talking and he then got up, went to the microphone and suggested playing a trivia game, for drinks!”
It was no ordinary trivia game, Isabel said. “The questions were tough!” Isabel wound up answering two questions (and winning two drinks. I guess that made the trip a bit more interesting for her.) One of her questions - who fought the Punic Wars? (Answer: Rome and Carthage).
But there was also a touching moment amidst the fun. “The flight attendant said, ‘name the five recipients of the Medal of Honor for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.’ No one could,” she said. “But then he asked who could name five winners on American Idol. Lots of hands shot up.”
